Virtual Center Stage

Join Performing Arts Director DeDe Vogt on Virtual Center Stage as we explore new works by local authors Jerry Grillo and Ivy Rutzky.

Jerry Grillo's first book is The Music and Mythocracy of Col. Bruce Hampton: A Basically True Biography, which will have its official release from the University of Georgia Press on April 1st.

Jerry has been writing stories, in one form or another, for most of his life. First as a cartoonist, and for a very long time as a journalist. His full-time working hours these days belong to Georgia Tech, where he's worked since 2014, writing about mad scientists and their good works in biomedical engineering. Ivy Rutzky worked in the American Museum of Natural History in New York City for 25 years. In 2009, she headed south, trading in dioramas of nature for the real woods of Northeast Georgia. She kayaks in a nearby lake, writes poetry and wanders in her backyard creek.

Her column, "Bear With Me", appeared in the White County News for a decade. Now available in hardback, Bear With Me chronicles her transition from city girl to country gal.

LEWIS GRIZZARD: IN HIS OWN WORDS

SATURDAY, JUNE 5 • 7:30pm & SUNDAY, JUNE 6 • 4pm in the Center Theater
featuring actor Bill Oberst, Jr.

Actor Bill Oberst, Jr. has stepped into the late Lewis Grizzard's shoes over 1,000 times in the last decade. Oberst's portrayal of the Southern writer and humorist is a one-man show authorized by Grizzard's family, which says it is the closest thing to seeing the late great spokesman of the south onstage again since Grizzard's death at age 47.

Grizzard's widow Dedra still remembers the moment she first saw Bill Oberst, Jr. as her late husband. "When he looked down over those glasses and the audience laughed, it really was like seeing a ghost." she says. Yet Mrs. Grizzard was skeptical. A tribute show with an actor playing Mr. Grizzard had not been her idea, but hers was the final word. "After the show so many people came up and thanked me. So I decided that maybe we could do this in a way that honored Lewis's memory, which was the most important thing to me. I told Bill "Let's just try it and see what happens." Twelve hundred performances later, the show is still going strong.

HEADWATERS REUNION CONCERT

Historic Gym

From 2007-2013 the Sautee Nacoochee Cultural Center produced a remarkable community story play, under the banner of Headwaters - celebrating the twelve different rivers that begin in our Goodly Portion of Beautiful Northeast Georgia, and so much more.

Members of those Headwaters casts will come together for a one-night reunion, featuring music and stories and laughter, as we continue to honor the generations of people who have called these mountains their home. Because, simply put, there ain't no place anything like this place anywhere 'round this place, so this must be the place.
