There is a distinct feminine touch to the 2010 Sautee Jamboree, the fifth and most diverse installment of the two-day music festival at the Sautee Nacoochee Center happening on Friday and Saturday, September 24th and 25th.

There also is a palpable celebratory buzz bouncing off the hills and through the hollers of Northeast Georgia over this year’s headline act, the Indigo Girls.

“This year it really does feel like a celebration,” says Tommy Deadwyler, co-producer and co-founder of the Jamboree. “It’s our fifth Jamboree, we’ve made it this far and we continue to grow. And we’ve got the Indigo Girls. How cool is that?”

Very cool for members of the Sautee Nacoochee Community Association, who got first dibs on tickets and started grabbing them at a record pace. Deadwyler says plans are to cap attendance at 1,000 and sales have been brisk in anticipation of the Indigos, the Grammy Award winning duo of Emily Saliers and Amy Ray, who will take the outdoor stage in Sautee as Friday night’s closing performance.

Saturday night’s headliner is singer/songwriter Michelle Malone, whose album Debris received a 2010 Grammy nomination for Best Americana Album.

Of the nine bands providing ten performances over the span of two days, six are entirely female or fronted by a woman, giving the Jamboree a whole new sonic feel.

“We’ve had requests over the years for more female artists,” Deadwyler says. “And we’ve been listening. We’d been talking about the Indigos, they are considered hometown girls in the Northeast Georgia area, they’ve spent a lot of time up here and have ties to our community.

“There was always a sense of, ‘wouldn’t it great if ...’ Well, this year the timing was right and they are generous enough to come play our festival to help us raise money for a great organization that does so much for the community and the arts.” All proceeds from the Jamboree support the Sautee Nacoochee Community Association (SNCA).

The music begins at 7 p.m. Friday night with Jamboree favorites The Mosier Brothers (Jeff Mosier on banjo and vocals, Johnny Mosier on guitar and fiddler wizard David Blackmon), followed by Roxie Watson, an all-female five-piece string band at the forefront of the “alterna-grass” genre. The Indigo Girls, who have recently released a two CD album (Poseidon and the Bitter Bug), will take the stage around 10 p.m.

As always, there’s no need for weekend ticket-holders to hit the road – once again, the Sautee Jamboree will feature free camping on the SNCA campus. You can start Saturday with an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast in the SNCA community hall, then work it off while dancing to the day’s opening act, Davin McCoy, who will be serving up some straight ahead soulful rock.

He’ll be followed on the oak-draped stage by two bands that braved the torrential rains that hammered last year Sautee Jamboree – Lingo, a quartet from Marietta with jam virtuosity, and the Spartanburg-based Shane Pruitt Band.

“Last year in the pouring rain, Shane chose to just stay up there and the thunder and lightning became part of his rhythm section,” Deadwyler says. “He’d just bend those strings with the thunder and lightning. He’s a madman, but you have to have that kind of energy at a festival. Now that we know Shane, I can’t see how we can do a Jamboree without him.”

The same could be said for the Mosier Brothers, who will also play a late Saturday afternoon set. “The Rev. Jeff Mosier helped us get this festival off the ground in the very beginning, helped us take it from the dream to reality,” says Deadwyler, who used to be the road manager for Blueground Undergrass, a seminal country/ jazz/bluegrass/rock lineup that Mosier fronted for years, and a headline band in previous Jamborees.

“As long as there is a Sautee Jamboree, Jeff and Johnny and David will be a part of it if they want to be.”

The ladies will own Saturday night.

Atlanta-based singer/songwriter Sonia Leigh’s haunting voice will pierce the spirit of the valley at the dinner hour, as country, blues and rock come together in one sultry, petite but powerful package. Then it’s Rosie Ledet and the Zydeco Playboys. The striking Ledet gives the male-dominated zydeco world a unique feminine voice singing sly, lusty songs in Creole French and English.

Malone closes the musical weekend with a set that will begin around 10 p.m., and campers are invited to spend the night again.

Tickets for the Sautee Jamboree are $35. Food vendors will be cooking up goodies on site. Cold soft drinks and beer will be available, as will the latest version of the sought-after Jamboree T-shirt (designed by local artist Andy Slack). Keep the dog at home, please, and coolers outside the festival venue.

Call the Sautee Center Box Office for tickets at 706-878-3300 or go to www.snca.tix.com

FRIDAY NIGHT - SEPTEMBER 24th

The Indigo Girls

Indigo Girls

www.indigogirls.com

It’s been two decades since the Indigo Girls launched their career with their independently released debut album, 1987’s Strange Fire. Now, after entertaining millions of fans with their 10 major-label studio albums (nine on Epic Records and one, 2006’s Despite Our Differences, on Hollywood Records), Emily Saliers and Amy Ray have come full circle with the independent release of their new 2-CD album, Poseidon And The Bitter Bug, on their new label IG Recordings, distributed through Vanguard Records. The new album reunites the Grammy-winning duo with veteran producer, arranger and keyboardist Mitchell Froom (Elvis Costello, Paul McCartney, Los Lobos and others), who worked on the Indigo Girls’ acclaimed 2006 release, Despite Our Differences. Longtime bassist Clare Kenny, drummer Matt Chamberlin and engineer David Boucher make up the rest of the core band but the sound is pure Indigo Girls, with uplifting, effortless harmonies; honest, passionately involved lyrics and infectious melodies.

“Mitchell was able to build a bridge between Emily’s songs and my songs more successfully than anyone we’ve worked with, says Ray, “he’s a musicians’ musician and has a very clear idea of what will work.” Adds Saliers, “He likes Amy’s music and he likes my music, which is not the easiest thing to find because we are so different and our songs are different.”

The album was recorded in Atlanta in a whirlwind 3-week session – they wanted to keep a sense of spontaneity and discovery to the process. And it’s the songwriting that shines on Poseidon, with the duo exploring new approaches to melody, harmonics and rhythm, especially on Saliers’ “Digging For Your Dream,” which she says is “as close to R&B as I’ve ever gotten,” and Ray’s “Sugar Tongue,” a fevered meditation on colonialism that finds her experimenting with her higher vocal range to capture an innocence not commonly displayed by the fiery rocker. Says Saliers, “For a band like us, it might feel inauthentic if we tried to branch out in some crazy way musically. That's why Amy makes solo records, so she can do her own thing outside of what we do together. As a unit, we do what we do and Mitchell just happens to bring the best out of it.  That's a good thing at this point in our career.”

One thing the Girls have done differently on Poseidon is include a second CD that features acoustic versions of all the songs, plus a bonus track, “Salty South.”  It’s a chance for listeners to hear stripped down, organic versions of the songs – just the Girls in a room with a few mics – before the arrangements changed with the addition of the band.

With a Grammy, six Grammy nominations and a legacy of releases and tours behind them, the Indigo Girls have outlasted many of their peers and forged their own way in the music business. They’ve always thought  independently, and have always balanced their commitment to music and performing with an unwavering commitment to social, political and environmental issues – Ray and Saliers don’t just talk the talk; they walk the walk. In 1991, Ray and Saliers co-founded the non-profit organization Honor the Earth to raise awareness and financial support for indigenous environmental justice, and over the years they have supported groups fighting for women’s rights, civil rights for same-sex couples, and the abolition of the death penalty as well as voter registration.

Now with their own imprint, the Girls have come full circle; they’ve weathered the ups and downs of the music industry and come out with their musical vision and enthusiasm intact.

“I am overwhelmingly excited to be independent because it really is where the heart of music sits for me,” says Ray, “I don't have many regrets about the major-label life of the band because we certainly got a lot out of it. We were lucky enough to be on Epic when Pearl Jam and Rage Against The Machine were our label-mates and the company was developing bands with the intent of creating catalog artists. That has all changed, and it's just not worth being on a major. It hasn’t felt worth it for a long time. Beyond that, it never fed my soul the way an independent career can.”

“I feel a great sense of freedom in finally being rid of the major-label world,” Ray says. “It’s been a burden for a while for me. I felt an honesty and sincerity making Poseidon, because I fully believe in independence.” Saliers says, “It fees liberating and centering, even in the midst of change.”

Poseidon And The Bitter Bug is the work of career artists at the top of their artistic game, invigorated to be doing what they love best, writing and performing music. With these two CDs, the Indigo Girls give listeners an intimate look at their songwriting and how it is affected by the recording process. Poseidon is a release that affirms the Indigo Girls position not only as musical icons but as artists who continue to live up to the high standards they have set for themselves.

Roxie Watson

www.roxiewatson.com

Roxie Watson is a five piece string band that is birthing a new musical genre – “alterna-grass” – a finely crafted blend of bluegrass, country, western and blues, with splashes of soul, zydeco and Hee Haw. Roxie Watson draws from the varied talents and musical histories of each of her members to deliver rich harmonies, amazing fretwork, and soulful solos.

The Roxie Watson musicians are Beth Wheeler (Belloluna, Wendy Bucklew, The Brambles), Lenny Lasater (Lenny Lasater Electrical), Linda Bolley (Michelle Malone Band, Herman Put Down the Gun, Susi French Connection), Sonia Tetlow (Herman Put Down the Gun, The Paul Sanchez Rolling Road Show, Cowboy Mouth, STB), and Becky Shaw (Susi French Connection, STB, Reversing Hour).

When you experience Roxie Watson’s music, you may spontaneously break into a two-step, hanker after an old flame, or simply relish the sweetness of a summer rain. Whatever your response, there’s no denying that each member of Roxie Watson is playing the music she was born to play.

Roxie Watson began as a duo when Beth Wheeler (mandolin, vocals) and Lenny Lasater (electric bass, vocals) began jamming in Beth’s carpentry workshop. The duo became a trio the moment Linda Bolley (electric guitar, acoustic guitar, vocals) sat in on a song at Roxie Watson’s first performance. The band soon got a gig performing at a birthday party. Beth drove her pickup into the front yard and the trio spent the evening serenading the party and most of the neighborhood from the back of that Ford F-150.

When Sonia Tetlow (banjo, vocals) heard all the fuss about this amazing string band on the back of a truck, she decided then and there to go buy a banjo and jump on in– the band was ecstatic to have their fourth member! At that same truck show, Becky Shaw (acoustic guitar, accordion, lap steel, harmonica, vocals) fell in love with the Roxie Watson sound. Later on down the road, she was asked to sit in on a song or 2 with the gals, and at that moment she was enthusiastically welcomed into the fold. At last, Roxie Watson as we know it was born and has been writing original songs and collecting surprising covers ever since. Roxie Watson is now on a crusade to serenade the world, maybe even from the back of a pickup truck.

Twenty-five years ago, Jeff and Johnny Mosier started playing banjo and guitar for fun in church or wherever people needed or wanted to hear bluegrass. As time went on, they developed a repertoire based mostly on the request that they received at parties and picnics. Then in the mid-eighties , they began their connection with WRFG 89.3 in Atlanta as they created and produced "Born in a Barn" a weekly bluegrass radio show featuring a mix of new and old bluegrass recordings as well as live music, interviews and the ever popular "phone festival" - the segment of the program where people could call them and jam with them on the radio live. Jeff says, "Not everybody is lucky enough to play music with their family. Words can't describe how wonderful it is to play music with your on brother." With their tight harmonies and impromptu style of bluegrass, the magic begins with the very first note and always leaves you wanting more.

Lingo garners a sound that remains undefinable, yet recognizable.   Whether it is the mixture of the subtle acoustic guitar accompanied by the flair of the electric guitar, the unique  vocals that capture your attention, or  the prominent bass and percussion that  add their own signatures to the Lingo sound, it is clear that Lingo's music has tapped into something unique and special.
