8:00 pm in the Center Theatre

...

Curley Maple

Curley Maple, an Athens, Georgia old time string band with contemporary styling, will perform in the Sautee Nacoochee Center Theatre August 7 at 8 p.m. The renowned and creative playing of ace fiddler David Blackmon is the driving force behind Curley Maple, complemented by the tight harmony singing of Noel Blackmon and Christian Lopez and their inventive work on guitars, mandolins, and bouzouki.

An unconventional “traditional band,” Curley Maple’s figures drone and swirl, nodding to both old and new and branching across time with a blend of old-time and Celtic fiddle tunes, songs, ballads and original compositions. Curley Maple gets its playful name fromthe figured tonewood, and a hiking shelter on the Tennessee/North Carolina border, deep in the heart of a region known for its distinctive Southern Appalachian and British Isles-influenced fiddle sounds…and from David’s secret yearning to be a Stooge.

At the core of Curley Maple are husband and wife duo David and Noel Blackmon. Both have been staples of the music scene in Athens for many years David is a renowned fiddler who played with country music legend Jerry Reed in the 1980’s. He was also one of the founding members of the jam band Blueground Undergrass, and has played in groups such as Widespread Panic and the Normaltown Flyers. During his years as a musician David has had the chance to share the stage with such greats as Vassar Clements, Sam Bush and Jerry Douglas.

Noel is the hardest working woman in show business around Athens. She is a veteran of such bands as Calliope Fair, Short Road Home and with singer songwriters Megan Baer and Dodd Ferrell . She also sings with the Athens Chamber Singers. A multi-instrumentalist, Noel plays guitar, mandolin and bouzouki for Curley Maple.

Christian Lopez a Nevada native who now makes his home in Athens is a talented singer songwriter in his own right with the release of his hit single “Down by the Drowning Creek” in 2004. He plays mandolin, guitar and clawhammer banjo for Curley Maple.

Chris Enghauser holds down the bass duties for Curley Maple. An active performer with many groups in the area from Symphony Bassist with the Macon Symphony to jazz, folk and bluegrass in other groups. Chris is currently teaching jazz bass at the University of Georgia.
