Remember the Thrift Shop

Our Thrift Shop continues to provide a generous portion of the SNCA annual operating budget. Please remember to shop there, tell your friends about it, and donate your furniture, books, dishes, toys, and appliances to the Shop. They need quality inventory to continue their success and their success is our success.

Hours: Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 12 noon - 4 p.m. Phone: 706-878-2934.

Treasures at the Center's Thrift Shop

There are all sorts of treasures to be found at the Sautee Nacoochee Community Association's Thrift Shop. If you're in doubt come meet the store's volunteers.

Sixteen hours a week, 52 weeks a year, approximately 24 women and men keep the Thrift Shop open and stocked. General Factotum Archie Cannon and her gang arrange displays, attend to customers, dust, vacuum, wash windows, chat about and give directions to the Center, accept, sort, price and, if necessary, clean up donations and generally have a good time taking care of the Center's number one money maker.

The volunteers say it is Archie who keeps everything in the black and running smoothly. Archie says it's the volunteers who make it work. No matter who's to blame, buyers and sellers alike have fun at the Thrift Shop.

The original store was in a house, owned by Marion Tidmore and her late husband Tom, and located in Helen on the "island" between the river and Main Street. Ask Archie Cannon and some of the current volunteers about those days — they have a million stories. That building was sold in 1998 and the proceeds given to SNCA.

In the early fall of 1999 the Thrift Shop, under the direction of Marion and Archie, had its grand reopening in a second-floor space in the Alpine Outlet Mall behind the Bass Shoe Store. Weeks later, they were once again packing up the inventory and searching for a new location. While Marion went on to pursue other interests (many of which were Center oriented), Archie and then co-manager Carol Adkins held a grand re-reopening on January 5, 2000 in the current location, next to Fieldcrest-Canon in the Alpine Outlet Mall.

So come on in! Donate old treasures. Buy new treasures. Meet the store's treasured volunteers. Become a treasure — volunteer at the Thrift Shop.

The Thrift Shop is open from noon to 4 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. All donations are tax deductible. (They take anything except mattresses, clothing, or electronics.)
