The 2008 Production is Underway

Headwaters :: Stories From A Goodly Portion Of Beautiful Northeast Georgia, our one-of-a-kind performance of this community’s stories will inhabit the Historic Gymnasium at the Sautee Nacoochee Center for the months of June and July.

Headwaters tells the stories of people and creatures throughout Beautiful Northeast Georgia, through music, movement, monologues and good old fashioned play-acting. People from here will recognize their neighbors, people from other places get to see a loving, yet clear-eyed, portrait of this very special place.

SNCA first produced Headwaters during SummerFest 2007, and the audiences and artists who were part of this remarkable event were uniformly enthusiastic. The leaders of this community performance adventure – director/producer Lisa Mount, SNCA Arts Program Directors Terri Edgar and Tommy Deadwyler, playwrights Jo Carson and Jerry Grillo, and the volunteer Story Team – considered ways to revise and re-think the play after its initial production, and all believe that Headwaters 2008 will be an even more engrossing experience for all involved.

A new story from this Goodly Portion has been added to the production for SummerFest 2008: a life-changing trip across the Chattooga River. Improvements are underway to the Gymnasium – thanks to generous donations and a big work day on April 18, the icky ceiling insulation is long gone. Production values – what the show looks like – will be even better than in 2007, and everyone’s favorite characters (the Bears) will have more to say this year.

Creating the performances that will take place from July 10 through 27 involves a dedicated company of local performers and professional theater artists. Rehearsals on Sundays and weeknights during June are open to SNCA members and friends – we’re there from 6:30 to 9:30 pm, feel free to stop by.

Many of the performers from 2007 are returning – nearly 20 out of the original cast of 31 – and another 18 local individuals are joining them to create a larger and more diverse ensemble. What is demanded of these performers is energy and commitment – prior experience on stage isn’t necessary, although many Headwaters company members have it. Learning how to perform this show is like learning the bends and turns in the Chattahoochee: the major landmarks in the river are constant, but the conditions are different every time you navigate it – it’s never the same river, or the same show, twice.

Tickets for Headwaters are available now, and expected to sell out. Dinner will be served prior to each show in the Community Hall. The menu is available below. A combo ticket – dinner and the show (Member price: $18, non-members $23) – is also a ticket to the Folk Pottery Museum.

Collecting Stories for Headwaters 2009

Have a story to share? The Story Team would be delighted to record it, transcribe it, and send it to the playwrights. Know someone who’s got a great story? Come check out a tape recorder and go get it. Headwaters 2009 needs material!

Themes we’re exploring for Headwaters 2009 include music passed down through families, more stories about rivers, and stories about families that have come to include both two-legged and four-legged members (seemingly hundreds of people have a tale to tell about a man named John Boy and his horse named Cowboy).

Plans for Headwaters 2009 are underway, including bringing in one of the nation’s top directors of community story performances, Gerard Stropnicky, who has been at the helm for Swamp Gravy in Colquitt, GA and Higher Ground in Harlan, KY. Playwrights Jo Carson and Jerry Grillo will once again be translating the stories we receive into scenes for the stage.

Headwaters makes our stories come alive, captures them for future generations, and offers a way for people who know and love this Goodly Portion of Beautiful Northeast Georgia to let others in on how things are up here.

Contact Terri Edgar if you’ve got a story to share or collect: 706-878-3300, headwaters@snca.org
