The Environmental Group
TREES
In addition to their important role in maintaining our water
supply (see WATER), trees are a significant part of the cultural
heritage and outstanding scenery that attract visitors and
new residents to our area. Conserving trees, while simultaneously
assimilating new residents and business, is a challenge. When
adhered to by developers, state and local regulations protecting
soil, streams, and mountains mitigate tree loss by limiting
removal and requiring replacement. Still, considerable tree
loss is inevitable as development and roadways expand.
Individual
landowners also contribute, wittingly or unwittingly, to tree
loss. So our programs aim to heighten public awareness of the
aesthetic, ecological, and economic value of trees regardless
of location – business park, homestead, school yard,
church ground, or other. To this end, the Environmental Group’s
focus is on:
• Heritage Trees – identification of
very old and/or large trees
• Saving the Hemlocks – control of the Woolly Adelgid
parasite
• Treescaping – promotion of trees in our landscape
