Summer 2008

  • Robin Swaby Miltner will teach all summer courses.
  • Classes meet once weekly for ten weeks, plus special five week sessions in the summer.
  • Video DVD is available for all classes except studio style classes, so you never have to miss a class!
  • An Achievement Certificate is awarded with the completion of each course.
  • Class sizes are limited to 10 students per class session.
  • We have a convenient art supply store for your class materials
  • Registrations are taken on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Tuition for each adult course, supplies not included, is $230 for SNCA members and $245 for non-members
  • $80 deposit with registration.

Summer 2008 Quarter Courses

Summer classes are enrolling now. If you are interested in joining an art class, be sure to stop by or call the Center to check the availability of the class of your choice. A waiting list is kept for filled classes as well.

Session 1 : week of July 7 till Aug 6
Session II :Aug 11 till Sept 10

Pottery Session I — Hand building
Learn the fundamentals of foundational pottery. You will be introduced to several methods of clay constructions including coil, slab, pinch and extrusion methods of hand building techniques. Intaglio, sgraffito and surface decoration will be emphasized as well as solid construction techniques. Functional as well as decorative art ware will be created. We will be working with white clay body, and will be glazing as well.

Pottery Session II - Terracotta Relief
Learn how to use hand building techniques to Sculpt low and high relief forms in natural Terracotta clay , much like the famous Italian Della Robbia dimensional style, unglazed work in 3-D relief style, for decorative and artistic sculptural design pieces. Some pottery work experience would be helpful but beginners are welcome as well. Drawing skills and visualizing in 3-D will be helpful. There is a materials fee for each class. All clays and tools will be provided.

Pain Free Perspective Drawing: Session I
Take the fear out of drawing aerial and atmospheric perspective. Make your pictures come alive with proper angles, vanishing points and distance gradations. Learn simplified perspective that anyone can understand. If you have a fear or drawing those buildings that need a vanishing point to look right, or finding the right shapes ,sizes and tonal variations for distance, this is the class for you!

Drawing with Color: Session II Introductions to Colored pencils
Learn classic colored pencil techniques of layering, burnishing and color mixing using colored pencils to draw with. Colored pencils can capture and infinite variety of styles and looks. Colored pencils also travel well and can be used anywhere with ease. Find out more about this versatile medium. Beginners are welcome.

Chinese Brush Painting : Watercolor Sessions I and II
(Each session will have a variety of different subject matter )
This time honored style of watercolor painting is lovely and delicate , serene and simple. If you are a watercolorist, try this for a new dimension to your painting. If you are beginner, you will find that this is a good technique to start with. Brush handling is the key ingredient, and with simple steps you will create lovely florals and animals in ink and watercolor on rice paper. All levels welcome. You may sign up for 5 or 10 week sessions.

Fabric and Textile Arts Session I & II
Ever wanted to design your own fabrics, paint on Silk, try batik? Now is your chance to learn many different surface treatments for designing, dying, painting and decorating various kinds of fibers. We will also be making out our art fabrics for use in collage and quilting work.
Session I: resist dying, discharge dyeing, tie dye, surface decoration and silk painting will be the focus of this session
Session II Batik, Shibori, Sublimation and digital printing , fiber manipulations-felting, and stitched art canvas project will be the topic of this session.

Wed 9:00 AM -12:00 noon

PLEIN AIR session I and II
Paint outdoors on locations. A variety of painting sites withing the general vicinity of SNCA will make the subject matter varied and exciting. Buildings, landscapes, waterfalls...the choices are unlimited. . Demonstrations, help at your easel and group critique sessions will be part of the days events. You may paint or draw in any medium of your choice. For those that have never ventured to the great outdoors to paint, a preliminary introduction to Plein Air will get you geared up to set off with what you need. In the event of inclement weather, the class will move to the studio. Any level of student can attend. You may come one or both sessions.

COLLAGE Session I , Session II TBA
Come explore a variety of mixed media techniques to combine exotic and handmade papers and ephemera in creative and novel applications. We will be designing several art pieces from realistic representations to abstract. Design, composition and proper use of archival materials will be covered, while fun and creative juices flow as we use one of the most creative forms of art. We will be designing many of our own papers for use in the art work as well. All levels welcome. No experience is necessary. There will be a materials fee for class.
