Studio Courses in Watercolor

Watercolor Painting for Beginners

Presupposing a working knowledge of drawing skills and the ability to see and translate values, this course uses teacher demonstrations to teach skills in manipulating water and paint with brush on paper to achieve various types of washes, textural passages, and brush strokes as well as theories and skills in achieving color mixtures.

Watercolor Painting for Advanced Beginners /Continuing Watercolor

Assuming a beginner's skills in using watercolor, this course offers reinforcement to those who still feel substantial uncertainties about handling watercolor painting. Emphasis is placed on practical methods for controlling the medium rather than on a dependence upon random chance. Advanced color washes, wet in wet and dry brush techniques will be expanded from the first class, with focus on mastering these various techniques and choosing techniques that you feel work for you personally.

Continuing Watercolor takes up where you left off, and reintroduces various skills you have acquired to become more proficient in your watercolor techniques. Learn to hone your brush handling as well as sound painting skills to adequately render realism. Perfect for the continuing study of watercolor, and for those that have had some experience with the medium but want to revisit skill level and increase proficiency under more specific guidance.

Intermediate and Advanced Watercolor Painting

Requiring a grasp of the basic techniques for controlling watercolor paint, this course focuses on exploring unusual techniques for achieving textures, washes, glazes and special effects which can be applied in watercolor painting. Specific direction will vary during each quarter, and will cover such aspects such as Wet in Wet , glazing styles, and dry brush realism approaches. Composition and design will be an integral part of this class, and students will work both with directed material and subject matter of choice.

Watermedia Painting: Experimental Approach

For intermediate and advanced watercolor painters this course presents demonstrations and class exercises focused on using your watercolor in new and bold ways to create dramatic textures, adding a variety of surface design to your painting repertoire. Some use of other water medium will be added as additional enhancements to the watercolor experience. If you want to branch out and try something new this is it.
